Zen Wellness fosters link between mind, body

Merrillville, IN – Zen Wellness owner Jackie Primos believes spa treatments and health education go hand in hand.

“Our goal is to beautify the body from the inside out. We focus on mind, body and spirit,” Primos said. “Our main thing is to educate our clients and to help them take responsibility for their health.

”Zen Wellness, located at 6111 Harrison Street in Merrillville, Suite 304, offers such services as ionic foot cleanses, reflexology, massages and facials.

Primos sees her six-member staff as another component to help clients work toward a healthier lifestyle.

“If you come in for a massage, she’s going to give you some after-home care and tell you some of the things maybe you have been doing that have contributed to the stress and pain,” Primos said.“We have to get (clients) to understand this isn’t just about luxury treatments but something you should incorporate into your regular maintenance.

”Zen Wellness, in Lake County, sprang from Primos’ experience with her grandmother’s health along with her background as a massage therapist.

“After my grandma started getting sick and I started getting more active in her health care, I realized a lot of the medications she was on weren’t really fixing anything,” Primos said. “So we went on a quest to get to the root of some of the problems she was having. This turned me on to the wellness aspect of what I was doing.

”She saw the opportunity to differentiate her business from other spas by emphasizing the wellness side.

Primos’ future goals include expanding into Northwest Indiana and Illinois and having a larger facility where she can showcase more products and services.

She offers spa parties at any location tailored to clients’ needs and she’s started focusing on seniors, offering in-home services.

“A lot of times they can’t get out because of traveling challenges,” Primos said. “We’re trying to address some issues and pay attention to some of the people who need it just as dearly as anybody else.

”Northwest Indiana Small Business Development Center business advisor Cindy Bertram through the various stages of her business, from start-up to expansion.

“Cindy has been really supportive in helping me develop my business plan initially and following up with different business and marketing ideas. I really appreciate the support I’ve had over the past year from her just to check in and see how things are going and to offer assistance, help and ideas,” Primos said.

“It’s nice to know someone’s been there from the beginning to see what’s going on and how I’ve progressed. At the beginning, it was financial information and what the banks are looking for and now, it’s following up and just asking questions to make me think about: ‘Did I forget to do some forecasting or did I forget to do ...’ it’s just something always out of the blue that when she calls she reminds me, to help sharpen me and make my business better.”
